i have 12 120 watt 12 volt panels , and a 24 volt charge controller , and a 24 volt inverter , 16, 6 volt batteries i series the batteries to 24 v . do i series the panels 2x2 then parallel them to the charge controll ?

Don,

Could you tell me the model #'s of the modules and the charge controller that you have?

I would be happy to make a wiring recommendation for you and double check that it works for your charger.

Thank you,

Adam

Adam   thank-you for the reply

i need to elaborate some ,,   i have had this system for going on 16 years now and i sufferd a lightning strike  that totaly blew up 4 panels , and took out one charge controller    , in repairing the system " as i have a spare inverter i" i thought i would make two systems .  here is what i have and have done.

40 -  kryocera 120w 12v  panels

3 - trace c-60  charge controllers    12/24 volt

1 - 12 wind charger

1- trace 12volt inverter

1- trace 24volt inverter

with the damage to the panels and controller and 8 batteries  and being off grid i had to get fixed fast .

so now the 12 volt system is on and running ,

20 batteries ,   24 panels , 2 charge controllers , wind and inverter   all is working .

i wanted to take the 16 batteries, 12 panels , and the 24volt inverter and make a second system   4 panels were fryed . as seemed the controller.

when seriesing the panels i would get 0 voltage , turns out more panels were burnt from the lightning then i thought ,,   so i cut into the back and found the burnt traces, and silver solderd them down 1 module each ,,, now they out put 33volts each in series ,,   the controller seems good when jumperd from 12volt to 24 volt , so all in all i have the two systems running now .

so in having two systems of different voltage , i split the breaker box to the house , so as not to collide the 2 inverters ,

i know this is a rig job and it has been very frustrating ,  i hope i have done the right thing in all this ,,,    any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

thank-you

Don, sorry to hear about the lightning strike.  Sounds like it was a direct hit on your array. I do not see anything problematic in your new approach and glad you've got yourself back online.  Isolating the two was probably a good idea as you are now feeding two separate battery banks.  Have you installed some surge protection devices to your repaired equipment?  If not, it might be a good precaution to have a few installed.  They say lightning doesn't strike twice in the same place but I would not want to risk having that happen to you again.
