AUO Solar
AU Optronics Corp. (AUO) is the world's leading supplier of green solutions.
AUO was formed in September 2001 by the merger of Acer Display Technology, Inc.,(the former of AUO, established in 1996) and Unipac Optoelectronics Corporation. In October 2006, AUO merged with Quanta Display Inc. to create a larger TFT-LCD manufacturer with more than 17% of the world's large-sized TFT-LCD market. Additionally, the amassed production of company's G6 reached worldwide top 1. Additionally, AUO is the first pure TFT-LCD manufacturer to successfully list at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).
AUO is able to provide customers a full range of panel sizes and comprehensive applications, offering TFT-LCD panels in sizes ranging from 1.2 inches to greater than 71 inches. AUO generated NT$467 billion (US$16 billion)(a) in sales revenue in 2010 and now houses the staff of more than 42,000 employees throughout its global operations spreading across Taiwan, Mainland China, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, the U.S., and Europe.
AUO is the first TFT-LCD manufacturer in Taiwan to mass produce TFT-LCD panels by means of G3.5, G4, G5, G6,G7.5 and G8.5 fabrications, and the constructing G8.5 fab has already entered mass production in June, 2009. AUO is the top manufacturer of large-sized TFT-LCD panels in the world with a market share of 15.5%(b). AUO's digital still camera TFT-LCD is ranked No. 1, printer is ranked No.1, and portable audio is also ranked No.1 in global market share(c).
As one of the leading TFT-LCD manufacturers, AUO is a technology innovator with strong emphasis on research and development on display technologies. Since 2002, AUO has been the leader in patent applications among Taiwan's flat panel industry. Established in 2002 and located in Taiwan's Hsinchu Science Park, AUO Technology Center is known to be Taiwan's largest R&D facility ever built. It currently houses more than 1600 dedicated R&D engineers. In 2004, IFI Claims Patents Service placed AUO as the 5th fastest growing patent applicant in the United Sates with a 98% annual increase. In 2006, AUO was ranked 6th in Taiwan's Business Weekly in terms of IP acquisition among the top 100 Taiwanese companies. In 2007, among the Top 300 Organizations Granted US Patents, AUO ranked No.108. In 2008, AUO was ranked No.53 on BusinessWeek InfoTech100. In 2009, AUO was included in the 2009/2010 Ocean Tomo 300® Patent Index in recognition of its achievements and constant dedication to patent development. As of 2011, AUO owns nearly 6000 patents worldwide, with over 5500 additional patent applications pending.
From Energy Efficiency to Energy Creation
AUO's vision as a green service provider is now looking even brighter. The company is already working as a vertical integrator in the PV industry for solar energy solutions.
