Does the amount of sunshine affect the type of batteries I need?

I don't get a lot of sunshine.  I need a diesel generator.  Does this affect the type of batteries I need?

You should size your system considering the amount of time that the batteries should be self sufficient without charging. Your battery bank capacity should be enough for your system given your sunshine considerations.There is an excellent battery sizing tool on the website that you might want to check,  http://www.civicsolar.com/battery-sizing-tool

No. The type of batteries you choose depends on how much you want to spend. Almost everyone uses flooded cell lead acid. 
What the amount of solar energy available affects is how many batteries you need for a given number of days of autonomy.
